In Australian Wines, Wine

Yalumba is certainly a name to reckon with. They are the oldest family-owned winery in Australia, going back to 1849 when Samuel Smith and his family left their native England for Port Adelaide and planted their first vineyard shortly after arriving. In 1852 Samuel, like so many others, got caught up in the Australian gold rush and managed to come back with £300 worth of gold which enabled him to buy 80 acres of land, two horses and a harness. The first Yalumba wine – the name comes from an Aboriginal term meaning “all the country around” – was released in 1853 and the Smith family, now in its fifth generation, have remained at the forefront of Australian winemaking ever since.

“Wine is a unique expression of the land. When you think about it, great wine is grown rather than made.” This is Yalumba’s philosophy in a nutshell. They control every aspect of the process from their own vine nursery – which is a varietal, clonal and rootstock provider to Australian wine growers – to being one of the few wine producers in the southern hemisphere to have their own cooperage, where they handcraft their barrels.

Yalumba has been a strong and proud believer in sustainable viticulture all along, developing a program for it in the mid-1990s, and all of their wines have been vegetarian and vegan friendly since 2011. “We’re convinced our efforts in protecting our natural resources reflect in the quality of wines we make,” says fifth-generation proprietor Robert Hill-Smith. “Quite simply, if we’re to focus on excellence in winemaking, it absolutely requires excellence in environmental management – the two are inseparable." They were the first wine company to win the Climate Protection Award from the US Environmental Protection Agency, in 2007. For every hectare of vineyard planted Yalumba dedicates at least one hectare of natural vegetation for conservation management, and they have planted thousands of trees over the past few decades.

ABC Fine Wine & Spirits is delighted to offer three Yalumba wines from their popular ‘Y’ Series to our guests – the Chardonnay, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines (at $12.99 each) represent the quality, the care, and the absolute deliciousness that Yalumba has been providing for 167 years. Try all three at your earliest convenience!
