In Cocktail Recipes, Spirits

Today’s blog post is written by Kara Pound of St. Augustine Distillery.

Did you know that the word punch was adopted from Sanskrit and means “five”? That’s because the boozy drink that’s been making a recent comeback was originally made with five ingredients: alcohol, sugar, lemon, water and tea/spices. Today, punches are becoming a favorite at craft cocktail bars around the nation.

To help celebrate the holidays, we asked Zach Lynch, brand ambassador at St. Augustine Distillery, to come up with an original punch recipe that’s sure to impress your friends and family. Lynch created Old City Punch, named after the fact that the distillery’s home is located in downtown St. Augustine aka the Nation’s Oldest City.

“Vodka is a great spirit for infusing,” says Lynch. “It’s basically a blank canvas. For this specific recipe, make sure that you don’t leave the cinnamon stick in for too long or it will turn bitter tasting.”

Old City Punch

  • Fresh Lemon Juice (squeeze one lemon)
  • Fresh Orange Juice (squeeze one orange)
  • 16 oz St. Augustine Distillery Florida Cane Vodka infused w/ cinnamon sticks and cloves*
  • 1 16.9-oz bottle Ginger Beer (Fever Tree)
  • 1 bottle Martinelli’s Sparkling Apple Cider
  • Cinnamon Sticks, Cloves, Apple Slices, Orange Slices and Lemon Slices, for garnish

*To make the infused Florida Cane Vodka, put one cinnamon stick and five cloves into the bottle and let sit for five hours.

Take a large punch bowl and add a few scoops of ice. Next, pour in the cinnamon-clove infused Florida Cane Vodka, bottle of ginger beer and bottle of sparkling apple cider. Squeeze the juice of one lemon and one orange into the punch. Garnish with cinnamon sticks, cloves, apple slices, orange slices and lemon slices.

Serve with a ladle into punch cups and enjoy. Cheers!
