Few things present themselves as common a stronghold as coffee and liquor. It’s been this way since about the 15th century; but in 1936, Veracruz, Mexico there was born a liqueur so classic that it’s come to have its own day of honor!Welcome to National Kahlua Day, imbibers. Today we celebrate the number one selling coffee liqueur in the world. Kahlua is perhaps so adored because it relies on two of the regions finest ingredients – sugar cane and 100% Arabica coffee. The resulting flavor is as rich and distinct as the vibrant, multicultural region from which it comes.
Maybe your Monday started out a little rough, or you’re trying to time-travel to the weekend. We promise that celebrating today will help in both cases.
1. Make a Kah-lada
- Kahlúa Colada
- 1 ½ oz Kahlua
- 1 oz Light Rum
- 2 oz Unsweetened Pineapple Juice
- 1 oz Coconut Cream
- ½ oz Cream
- ½ oz Lime Juice
Add all ingredients to a blender with ice. Blend until a smooth tan color. Serve in a hurricane glass.
2. Bake a Kahlua trifle
A mixture of chocolate, coffee and whipped mousse, this recipe is the perfect match for after dinner cocktails and cups of espresso.
- 1 box Chocolate Cake Mix (plus ingredients to make the cake; check the directions on the box)
- 2 boxes Instant Chocolate Pudding (plus milk to make the pudding; check directions on the box)
- Heath Bar Pieces (found in the baking aisle)
- 1 cup Kahlua Coffee Liqueur
- 1 large container Cool Whip
Using a rectangular pan, bake the cake according to the directions on the box. 2. Make chocolate pudding according to the directions on the box. 3. Once cake is cooled completely, poke holes in the top using the end of a wooden spoon. 4. Pour the coffee liqueur over the entire cake, cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight. 5. In a trifle dish, layer crumbled cake, pudding, Whip Cream and candy pieces. Repeat the layer a second time, ending with candy pieces on top.
3. Add a little spice!
- 1 Part Kahlúa Chili Chocolate
- 1 Part Tequila, Añejo
- 1 Part Espresso
Pour everything over ice, stir and strain into a chilled coop glass. Garnish with coffee or espresso beans.
