The debate over whether to drink from a can or bottle is far from over, but for the long weekend you’ve been dreaming about since Spring Break, we present to you, a couple of canned classics. These beers are tried-and-true, with a (healthy) cult following. If you haven’t tried Cigar City’s Jai Alai IPA or Funky Buddha’s Floridian Hefeweizen, check out the tasting notes and then head on over to your nearest ABC Fine Wine and Spirits!
Funky Buddha’s Floridian Hefeweizen
This unfiltered, wheat-style beer (with hints of sweet fruit and a tinge of citrus and spice) is light but saturated with refreshing pops of orange peel and banana, especially on the nose. Taking a swig opens up the palate for authentic hefeweizen yeast to yield flavors of bananas bread, lemon and cloves. The malt body pairs especially well with crab cakes by the pool to pineapple upside down cake around a fire pit.
Cigar City’s Jai Alai IPA
A true trailblazer in the world of craft beer, Jai Alai IPA alerted beer drinkers to the fact that they might even enjoy IPAs. The hoppiest of beer styles, IPA’s best examples showcase balanced bitterness and subtle malt flavors, which is exactly what goes down in this can. Aromas of candied citrus peel and tangerine lead into clementines, Valencia orange and subtle caramel, acting as a balance to the bold hops and rich malt character. Drink this brew straight from the can next to a spicy salmon roll or BBQ sandwiches.
