Summertime, the time for pool/beach parties and firing up the grill as much as possible. It is hard to beat a good hamburger by the pool or a nice grilled steak while watching the summer sun drop below the horizon. Fortunately, the breweries out there provide us with plenty of great brews to enhance such events. I have chosen a few perfect for any summer occasion, and what follows will be my review of those beers.
I chose two beers of three different styles: IPAs, radlers and ciders. I’ll start off with the IPAs. The first is Southern Tier Tangier, a session IPA brewed with tangerine peels. This beer is golden in color with a slight orange hue. On the nose, I get a lot of citrusy hops. Upon sipping this brew, a burst of citrus up front is followed by a good dose of hops on the back end. Tangier is smooth and easy to drink with a lot of flavor, which is what I like in a session beer. At 4.6% ABV, this beer is great for having a few outside during those hot summer days.
TropiCannon is the newest offering from Heavy Seas. This IPA is infused with mango, grapefruit and blood orange. It is deep golden in color with heavy grapefruit aromas on the nose and just a touch of blood orange. This beer was like a liquid tropical fruit salad. Grapefruit is the most dominant flavor followed by the blood orange. The mango came through at the back end. This beer was incredibly smooth. At 7.25% ABV, I recommend this one as your end of the summer night beer.
For the next beer, I went local with Due South Grapefruit Radler. This brew is hazy orange in color with a pinkish hue. It almost looks like a half and half mix of ruby red and white grapefruit juice. This beer uses a lager base, which is apparent in the flavor. The grapefruit is strong up front with that traditional lager finish. At 3.8% ABV, this would be a great picnic beer.
Sprecher Peach Radler uses a wheat beer as its base. Peach Radler has a hazy golden color. The nose exhibits fresh peaches with hints of the banana and clove esters you find in hefeweizens. The taste follows the nose in unison. I get strong, fresh peach flavor up front and a traditional hefeweizen finish. At 4.5% ABV, this is perfect for the pool.
Next, the ciders. Keel & Curley Mad Man Strawberry Cider has a light pinkish color that is reminiscent of white zin wine. On the nose, I immediately feel the need for a warm piece of toast as it smells of strawberry jam. The taste is also of strawberry jam, yet this cider is not as sweet as one would think given the smell and taste of it. It sits at 6.2% ABV and would pair well with an afternoon spent on the front porch.
Finally, Rekorderlig Strawberry Lime Cider. Deep pink in color and aromas of fresh strawberries. Again, the taste follows the nose and it sends you strolling through the strawberry field. This cider sits at 4.5% and would be great for camping.
