Artisanal and rum are now two words that can walk in perfect harmony together. We're excited to introduce Puerto Angel Rum, a handcrafted-from-organic-sugarcane rum that is grown at the high elevations of the Oaxaca Mountains in Mexico. The unique combination of weather patterns, sun exposure, high altitudes above sea level and rich vol­canic soils of this rugged, remote area makes for a terroir-driven rum (yes, you can even find terroir in rum!).

Artisanal production techniques involve slow, natural fermentation of the freshly pressed sugarcane juice for seven days and a small batch distillation in traditional copper pot stills. Puerto Angel Blanco is aged for six months in slightly charred, American, white oak barrels, sourced from Missouri, while the Amber matures in wood for three years. Both are USDA Organic certified.

But what does it taste like?

Puerto Angel Blanco: This is the kind of nose that brings a smile to a rum lover. It is earthy and rustic, with a complex profile that gradually de­velops to evoke the aromas of black peppercorn, grass and blooming fields filled with springtime vegetation. It is delicate on the palate, with hints of ginger, fruit, baked apple, plantain and bananas Foster and a speckle of spice. Bittersweet and almost succulent in its grassy intensity.

Puerto Angel Amber: Aroma is vegetal and flowery, with deft hints of tobacco, marshmallow, baked apple and white raisins. The entry is maple-like with vanilla bean flavors leading to the fresh, new honey, brown sugar, black pepper and thyme notes in the midpalate. The finish showcases the influence of oak with its slightly toasted flavors that harmonically combine with rum's floral, earthy and lightly spiced notes.

Puerto Angel Amber Rum with a rum old fashioned recipe in a rocks glass with an orange garnish

Oaxaca Old Fashioned

2 oz Puerto Angel Amber Rum
1/2 tsp Demerara Sugar
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
1 tsp Water
1 Orange Peel

Combine sugar, bitters and water in a large rocks glass and stir to dissolve the sugar. Add several large ice cubes and Puerto Angel Amber Rum. Stir well to thoroughly chill the drink. Squeeze the orange zest to express aromatic oils and drop it in the glass.

Oaxaca Daiquiri

2 1/2 oz Puerto Angel Blanco Rum
3/4 oz Fresh Lime Juice
3/4 oz Simple Syrup
2 Thin Lime Peels

Squeeze the lime zest strips into a shaker to release oils. Add the rest of the ingredients and shake to mix well. After shaking for at least 10 seconds, strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a lime twist.
